  • Open Question: Worried about getting into Medical School...?

I just started my second year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I'm majoring in Medical Microbiology and Immunology, with Honors in the Liberal Arts, a Certificate in European Studies (our school doesn't do minors, certificates are the closest thing we have,) and possibly Honors in the Major. I want to go to medical school in the future, however, I'm terrified I am not/wont be qualified. My GPA first semester was a 3.8, but after second semester it dropped to a 3.5 (o-chem killed me). My grades are as follows: Introduction to Global Cultures-A Fourth Semester French- A Advanced General Chemistry- AB Second Semester Introductory Biology (I skipped first semester due to AP scores): AB Introductory Organic Chemistry- C Intermediate French Language and Culture- AB Introductory Psychology- A I also have been in the All University Strings Orchestra for two semesters, and received an A for both semesters. While I still have time to bring my GPA back up, I'm fearful it will be difficult. I have yet another semester of organic chemistry, plus another difficult microbiology class, the associated labs, and two other liberal arts honors classes this semester. Furthermore, I haven't done any extracurriculars (unless you count orchestra), volunteering, or research work yet, and my credit load is so heavy this semester, that I'm not sure that I will have time to start, although I was planning on volunteering at the hospital this semester. However, in conjunction with my lack of time, there were a few other reasons why I can't start volunteering at the hospital this semester, at least right away. My credit load next semester should be lighter and allow for more extracurriculars and volunteering, but I'm afraid that if I start next semester, it wouldn't be enough to “look good” on my applications. As far as research goes, either first or second semester next year, I plan on doing a directed study for credit, which will hopefully segue into a research opportunity for my senior honors thesis. What I am looking for in this question is, all things considered, how does this look so far in terms of getting into medical school in the future? Of course, one would hope that my grades would continue to improve, and that I would get to start doing more extracurricular, research work, and volunteering in the semesters to come, but is it too little too late? And say I don't get straight As in all of my classes, but perhaps a mixture of As, ABs, Bs, and maybe one or two more Cs, how will this affect my chances of getting into medical school? Furthermore, is putting all this effort into getting an Honors in the Liberal Arts, Honors in the Major, and a Certificate in European Studies even worth it to medical school admissions? I should clarify, my GPA last semester wasn't a 3.5, that is my total GPA currently, 1st and 2nd semester combined (its actually a 3.554)

  • Open Question: Are there such credit builders as cashplus creditbuilder available in the US?

In the UK there is a service where you use this card and it improves your credit score.. Cashplus offer two products. A flexi product for less frequent users, where you pay a fee each time you use the card, or a monthly fee version, designed for normal – high card users. This product comes with a £4.95 fee that is billed monthly, but purchase transactions and fund reloads are free of charge, so all you pay is a fixed £4.95 each month. Now, with creditbuilder, you agree to have the card for 12 months. You sign a 12 month loan agreement for a total of £59.40 (12 x £4.95 = £59.40) and Advanced Payment Solutions (who operate and service the card) loan you the money to pay for the Cashplus card for 12 months. The loan can ONLY be used to pay for the Cashplus card, and can't be used for any other purpose. You then just need to ensure that you have at least £4.95 in your account each month, and the £4.95 monthly fee is taken as normal and credited to your loan account with APS. These payments are reported to Experian each month. Ive read about pre-paid credit cards but those dont report to credit agencies..do they? so, is there a service like this in the states?

  • Resolved Question: Is life actually this? Why am I unable to help myself?

I'm a 15 year old from India. My mother's a schizophrenic. I was more attached to her as a child. Then.. A lot of things happened and I hated her. Still.. A gap was left.. She loved me more than my father ever showed. I was 13 when our relations spoiled.. She left and started living in another city a year back. Now, my problem is that, before our relations spoiled, i was really cheerful, positive, sincere, bubbly.. Now.. I've become very dull.. Negative, and lost my interest in studies.. I could credit my self hatred to my insincerity towards studying.. My father praises me only when I score good.. Which is more than two years ago.. All he wants from me are good marks.. I might say i was 'over' sincere earlier.. And it was nice.. I did all my learning timely.. I had a willingness to learn and perform.. Probably. That's why i was good at that time. Now.. Each day i tell myself i'd sincerely do all my studies properly, without wasting any time. But.. I'll go back to my room and waste time. No focus. Days go by. Months go by. Nothing happens.. I just expect something too. But the fact is that nothing is going to happen on its own. I feel.. How can it be possible that one fine day i become very sincere.. And finish all my lessons.. How can it happen.. Why hasn't it happened as yet, if it could? Why is time just passing.. And nothing happens.. Like.. It's been two years and my performance may soon reach a level that i might flunk.. It hasn't yet.. But i don't think i have learned anything as yet wrt the importance of studies.. I have been a good student and i know what it takes. But my life feels so frozen.. I suffer from mild depression.. I get into a negative thought spree.. Feel empty.. Meaningless.. Life doesn't seem to be worth continuing.. It seems tiring.. Despair I just don't get it when i hear that no one can change my life as much as i can.. I've posted several questions in the past.. But it doesn't help. I've improved only a little.. By the way.. I lived only with my father for the last couple of years. I'M now living in a hostel. Away from home. Expecting something better from life. I used to be very lonely and felt unloved even then, as my relations with my father were never "great" as compared to my mother.. There's more in my previous questions.. Now.. What exactly should happen.. One fine day i just start focusing? I don't know. Please, help.

  • From bdancer222: There is no extra advantage to paying on your credit card ...

There is no extra advantage to paying on your credit card before you get the monthly statement. Use the card and pay it in full every month when you get your statemetn. You can then take advantage of the interest free grace period between the purchase and the due date. Paying on time every month will build a good payment history. But you don't build credit overnight. You have to have a 6 month history to even have a FICO score. It takes years to build up a good score. I don't know where you got that 171 credit score but it's not a FICO score. Anything below 300 defaults to 0.

  • From StephenWeinstein: Paying off the credit card at any time from when you use it ...

Paying off the credit card at any time from when you use it to when the bill is due is good. Paying before you receive the bill is not bad, but is not better than paying after, as long as you pay before the bill is due. (Waiting until after the bill is due would be bad.) Your "real" credit score is not available for free. You may pay for it, but I do not recommend it. The website http://www.creditkarma.com offers free scores, but they generate these scores themselves using a different formula than the rest of the world uses. There is no way to improve a credit score "fast". Credit scores can fall fast, but they rise slowly.
